A small group of Owen Sound residents gathered at the Owen Sound Legion in opposition to Bruce Power’s plan to ship old steam generators to Sweden using the city’s harbour.
Around 20 people showed up to the meeting organized by concerned citizen Sharon Skelly on Tuesday night.
Some of those in attendance voiced a concern that by using the Owen Sound harbour to ship used nuclear steam generators, the City would be setting a precedent for other such endeavours.
Most were not keen on Owen Sound becoming a shipping point for nuclear waste.
In addition – all were worried about the potential health risks should something happen to the shipment while it is in transit.
There was even some discussion of the ship used to transport the steam generators being a potential terrorism target.
Skelly says an online petition will be posted and some of those in attendance will be taking a paper petition around the city.
There was some cynicism among those in attendance – not all were convinced that a petition would help matters.
There is speculation on whether council can even make a decision to delay or block the plan seeing as how we’re so close to a municipal election.
Regardless – Skelly plans to bring her petition and those in attendance at last nights meeting to the next Owen Sound Council meeting.
Skelly will also be in attendance at the public hearing before the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission in Ottawa later this month.
