Owen Sound City Councillor Tom Pink has made it official — he will not run for re-election.
Pink confirmed after a special meeting of city council on Tuesday night that he will not put his name forward for a second term.
The nomination deadline is Friday at 2 PM.
The married father of two says the time constraints are a factor and he would like to be more involved with his family again.
He also cites frustration with certain aspects of the job.
It’s been thought for months that Pink, the manager of the Owen Sound Farmers’ Market, would not run again this year.
But his comments on Tuesday mark the first time he has gone on the record about his decision.
Pink says he won’t change his mind prior to Friday’s deadline, but he acknowledges he’ll probably miss the job before too much time passes.
And so he’s not ruling out another run four years from now.
In the meantime, he intends to remain active in civic affairs as a public member of city committees.
That’s how his political career got started, with six years on committees before successfully winning a seat on council in his first attempt in 2006.
Pink’s decision means at least one-third of Owen Sound’s current nine-member council will be replaced in elections on October 25.
Councillor John Christie has also said he will not run again
Councillor Deb Haswell is one of two people challenging incumbent Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners, meaning either Haswell or Lovell Stanners will also not be back.
