Good news for the Saugeen Mobility and Regional Transit system, better known as S.M.A.R.T.
Transportation Minister Kathleen Wynne has personally pledged to do what she can to eliminate duplication among government agencies for specialized transit systems.
The news comes after S.M.A.R.T representatives requested her help on the matter during the recent AMO Conference.
They say the duplication of services in the Grey Bruce region are creating an odd competition between government funded agencies.
S.M.A.R.T. Manager of Transit Services Roger Cook says by better streamlining services, money will be saved and taxpayer dollars will go further.
As the largest MTO supported specialized transit system in Grey Bruce, Cook says it would make good sense to have S.M.A.R.T. coordinate the services for the region.
He says this would create expansion opportunities to areas that currently don’t have access to specialized transit services.
Cook adds new partnerships could also be forged with local hospitals as well as the Local Health Integration Network.
Currently S.M.A.R.T. serves a cliental of about 500 people.
Most of the cliental are senior citizens or the disabled who rely on the not for profit transit system for their daily transportation needs.
