A battle is shaping up on Colpoy’s Bay over reports of illegal commercial fishing operations near Wiarton.
Anglers report nets are being set between Oxenden and the Colpoys dock and the Wiarton golf course.
These are areas in heavy use at this time of the year by sports anglers taking part in the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular fishing derby.
Bruce Grey Owen Sound MP Larry Miller is calling for charges against the commercial fishing operations.
Miller tells Bayshore Broadcasting News it is time to have one law for everyone.
Miller says the MNR has taken away fishing licences from non-native fisherman on the waters of Georgian Bay.
And now he hears the two native bands involved in negotiations over fishing, have received 175 thousand dollars each, basically to negotiate a fishing quota.
He says it appears there is a free for all on our waters as far as the commercial anglers are concerned.
MP Larry Miller says the Commercial fishing nets at Colpoy’s Bay are a danger to sports fishermen, involved in the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular.
He says there is a danger of boats being pulled back and even submerged during a net encounter.
Miller says Anglers have died in such occurrences in the past.
So far, no word on what the MNR plans to do about the commercial fishing.
