Tomorrow marks the one year anniversary of the fire that destroyed the Chapman’s Ice Cream production facility in Markdale.
But the co-owner, Penny Chapman would like to forget about it.
Chapman says with the one year anniversary coming up, this has been an emotional week for her.
A spark from a welders’ torch touched off a blaze that burned the company’s historic production facilities to the ground.
Penny Chapman was hoping to have their new building ready for a grand opening by now, but there have been delays in construction.
She says with a 185 thousand square foot facility being built by hundreds of workers and with hundreds of pieces of material arriving from all over the world, delays simply happen.
Phase one will be done later this month and then all the production material can be moved over from the existing smaller location.
Penny Chapman expects to have everything completed, and a grand opening in November at the new multi-million dollar facility.
At this point, she has given little thought to what will be involved in the Opening this fall.
Chapman’s is spending 50 to 75 million dollars on the new plant which will employ some 450 people in Markdale.
