As expected South Bruce Peninsula Council is a step closer to keeping it’s garbage collection system as is.
At a recent council meeting — Council passed 1st and 2nd reading to a bylaw that would retain the current one free bag of garbage per household.
Councillor Dan Kerr has been pushing to have bag tags on all the trash taken to the curb, and he is disappointed other members of council can’t see the problem.
Kerr warns without increasing recycling by going to a full bag-tag system, South Bruce Peninsula will have to expand it’s landfill site at a cost of 5 to 8 million dollars.
Kerr says that will increase property taxes by 25 percent for 10 years.
One town councillor is putting out literature saying she supports free garage pickup.
Councillor Kerr says garbage is not free — and they need to shift more of the cost onto users and away from the property tax roles.
The issue of a full bag-tag system comes back to South Bruce Peninsula Council on August 31st for a final vote.
