Residents in Hanover are really cleaning up their act with the new clear garbage bag policy.
Since clear bags were implemented in July — garbage volume has dropped by 20 per cent and the recycling volume has increased by 18 per cent.
Councillor Peter Hambly says residents are getting used to the change and the grumblings over the new system are beginning to quiet.
Hambly says the clear bags will help prolong the life of the landfill.
This past month the recycling volume actually exceeding the garbage volume with 60 tonnes of recycling collected and 51 tonnes of garbage.
On another bright note — local businesses report an 80 per cent drop in the use of plastic shopping bags.
Hambly says this just goes to show that the trend towards reducing and reusing is catching on in Hanover.
Like Hanover, Walkerton is reporting a similar clear garbage bag success story.
Since Brockton implemented the clear bag policy this summer — garbage volume in Walkerton has dropped 25 per cent.
