Scientific studies are beginning to show negative health effects from our favourite wireless technology – cell phones.
Magda Havas is an Associate Professor of Environmental Resource Studies at Trent University.
She is researching effects of electromagnetic pollution that comes from technology like cell phones and their antennas.
Havas says our love of technology has consequences we didn’t anticipate because of the continued high usage.
She says cell phone antennas are being placed on top of apartment buildings — when they were designed to never be that close to people.
Havas points to scientific studies on people who live near antennas, where they become ill with side effects like insomnia, skin rashes, nausea and anxiety.
The cell phone was originally designed for people who travel a lot and for emergencies.
But Havas says now the public and even youth are holding the wireless device to their head for hours a day.
She says people need to start using the technology wisely because it will reduce so much of the radiation being emitted from the antennas.
By the end of this year, all homes in Ontario will have a Hydro Smart Meters on the outside.
She says those metres emit radiation that can travel through concrete, glass and wood.
Havas says she doesn’t care if individuals listen or act on what she says – But she does care when the government is ignoring studies and literature on the issue.
She says the government is responsible for protecting the public and should be taking these side effects more seriously.
