Bruce Power is welcoming the public hearing called by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
After public concerns were raised about the nuclear company’s plans to ship 16, decommissioned steam generators to Sweden via the Owen Sound Harbour, the CNSC set a one-day public hearing for September 29th in Ottawa.
Bruce Power Vice President of Corporate Affairs, Murray Elston, says they’re happy the safety commission wants to ensure the safety of the project.
He says it’s important for the public to have acces to information, and for that information to be scientific.
Elston says the want to take every step to make the move as safe and environmentally friendly as possible.
Bruce Power needs approval from the safety commission in order for the project to go ahead.
It also needs heavy load permits from local municipalities to drive the trucks on the roads.
Elston says they are hoping to have the low-level radioactive material ready for overseas shipping sometime this October or November.
Elston is hoping the late September date won’t throw them too far off that schedule.
He says he’s confident they can still complete the work this fall if they get the go-ahead.
