An open house will be held today in Owen Sound to discuss Bruce Power’s plan to ship radioactive waste on the Great Lakes.
The proposal has angered environmentalists and politicians, despite assurances the process is safe.
Bruce Power has applied for a licence to use the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River to ship 16 decommissioned steam generators from its plant on Lake Huron to Sweden for recycling.
A spokesperson for the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission appeared before City Council Monday and said the plan poses no danger to the public or environment.
But Ramzi Jammal says the plan won’t be approved until all commission requirements have been satisfied.
Owen Sound Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners says his comments have given her some peace of mind about the proposal.
Bruce Power says it filed the application in the spring and hopes to start shipments to Sweden in September.
Tonight’s open house will take place from 5 PM to 8 PM at the health unit building on the City’s east side of the harbour.
