Saugeen Shores is going to extend its Animal Control Contract with the Owen Sound Animal Shelter.
Councillor Luke Charbonneau says the current 3 year contract is up for renewal and the Shelter has submitted a proposal to extend it another 3 years.
Charbonneau says there will be a small hike of about 27 dollars a month to $1365.44 — a two per cent increase over last year’s rate.
There would also be an additional 5 dollar fee charged and paid to the Animal Control Service for all animals reclaimed by their owner.
The services provided include patrolling the municipality for 362 hours each year, impounding stray dogs and cats at the Southampton Pet Hospital, and responding to complaints.
Charbonneau says he would like to see it made more clear to the public that the Animal Control staff are indeed hired by Saugeen Shores to enforce town bylaws.
He also says while bylaw officers and police also enforce them, animal control can be a full time job and this contract is necessary.
