A miracle is slowly appearing in Wiarton.
It is Miracle Place, Wiarton’s first affordable rental apartment building that is being constructed on Charles street on land donated by the Salvation Army.
Miracle Place Spokesperson Paul Kastner says even though the start of construction was delayed by the weather, they expected the building to be completed by November.
He says there is an acute shortage of affordable housing in Wiarton and on the Bruce Peninsula and this building will help alleviate that problem to a certain extent.
Kastner says the building will consist of two one bedroom apartments, three two bedroom units and one three bedroom apartment.
In addition one of the units will be modified for people with disabilities.
Kastner says rents will be affordable and be no more than 80 per cent of standard rents being offered in the area.
The cost of the 900 thousand dollar project is being split between the Ontario and Federal governments and the local affordable housing corporation.
Kastner says they are hoping to pay off their 415 thousand dollar mortgage in about five years and if they can do that, then rents could be lowered by an additional 20 per cent.
