A spokesperson from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission is coming to Owen Sound.
The Mayor has invited someone from the federal agency to speak to Council about Bruce Power’s plans to ship 16, 100 tonne steam generators from the City to Sweden.
Ruth Lovell Stanners says it will give Council much needed information from an objective source about the safety of the plan.
Lovell Stanners hints that if the CNSC feels there is any risk to the public — she will vote against Bruce Power’s plan to load and ship the generators at the City’s port.
A spokesperson for the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has alreadyed downplayed any threat to public safety and says hazardous materials have been shipped through the Great Lakes before.
The visit will take place on Monday July 26th during a regular meeting of Council.
Bruce Power will host its own public meeting about the plan the very next night — July 27th — at the Grey Bruce Health Unit office in Owen Sound.
Lovell Stanners says she has talked to Bruce Power President and CEO Duncan Hawthorne about the project.
She tells Bayshore Broadcasting News there are still issues that need to be addressed.
For one — Lovell Stanners says the City’s Police Chief has not been told a thing about the project.
She says Tom Kaye will need to organize an escort for the generators and look at working with security once the generators are loaded at the harbour.
The Mayor also wants more information about insurance just in case something bad happens.
Lovell Stanners has expressed concern about the plan from the beginning.
Lovell Stanners admits she is not as concerned about the logistics of the project but wants more information about the safety of residents.
