Concerns are mounting locally over a plan by Bruce Power to ship low-level radioactive generators through the great lakes.
Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley says the issue was initially raised amongst hundreds of people on both sides of the boarder back in April.
The online petition started back in April includes local politicians, Michigan elected representatives, activists, and others who simply want answers.
Bradley says at the time of the petition, Bruce Power had not communicated to the people who would ultimately be effected by the move, causing locals to question the power companies motives.
Bradley explains they’re not worried so much about the science of the move, but rather about the lack of communication from Bruce Power.
Bruce Power is presenting to Owen Sound Council tonight.
Bruce Power is looking to get permission from the Nuclear Safety Commission to move 16, 100 tonne generators by the fall.
The 37 million dollar contract was signed by Bruce Power with a Swedish firm, that will take “mildly radioactive” material overseas and recycle most of the material in early May.
The low-level radioactive generators would be moved from Bruce Power’s plant on Lake Huron to Sweden where most of the material would be cleaned and re-sold.
