Personal Service Workers at the Trillium Court Seniors Community in Kincardine will be holding an information picket today.
Ken Dam — the Ontario representative of the Christian Labour Association of Canada — says they want to draw attention to the lack of government funding.
He says the PSW’s are doing the best job they can, but they’re frequently getting burned-out.
Dam says they want the government to mandate a minimum of 3.5 hours of care for each resident per day.
He says currently, the number of hours of care each resident gets is nowhere near that – and he says it’s because they are short staffed, and there are too many clients per PSW.
Those picketing today will be workers who are off-shift, or coming in early for a shift or staying late.
Dam says the workers care about the well-being of their patients, and therefore won’t pull workers off-shift to hold down the picket lines.
Dam adds there will also be concerned family members who see their mother or father often getting rushed care.
Dam says that’s because there aren’t enough staff to do the job properly, with the dignity the residents deserve.
The information picket will go from 1 PM until 3 PM Wednesday.
