Georgian Bluffs will extend a watermain from its system in East Linton to hook up with another system at Presquile.
Council passed a bylaw on Wednesday night that authorizes Harold Sutherland Construction to begin work on the project.
It is expected to cost the municipality about 160 thousand dollars.
Mayor Alan Barfoot says the link will enable residents of Presquile Road, MacIntosh Drive and the Sutacriti Park subdivision to receive municipal water at a reasonable cost.
There is a water system at Presquile that serves 34 properties, but it’s small and has been expensive for the residents it serves — about 21 hundred dollars a year.
Barfoot says it’s expected the rates will go down to less than 500 dollars once the extension is finished and properties are hooked into it.
The Presquile system will then be shut down as a stand-alone operation.
Other properties along the route of the planned extension currently have no municipal water.
Barfoot says it won’t be compulsory for those properties to be connected to the system, but there will be a mandatory cost for construction of the line regardless.
Residents can finance that cost over a period of three, five or 10 years.
Barfoot notes this is something many of the affected residents have asked for and are in favour of — as expressed at a recent public meeting.
He can’t say when work will begin, but the project will be complete by October.
