A proposed residential subdivision in Northern Bruce Peninsula to be located south of Little Pike bay facing opposition from an unusual source.
A person involved in snake conservation is worried that the construction could endanger or destroy the habitat of the threatened Massassauga Rattlesnake.
Matt Ellerbeck is a snake conservationist and fears any disruption to the local environment could further threaten the reclusive reptile.
He says more roads and human activity will also take a toll on the snake which is already being pressured by increased development on the Peninsula.
Ellerbeck says the Massassauga Rattler is already considered to be a threatened species, and the last thing anyone wants is to put it further to the brink.
He also questions assurances from the developer about doing everything possible to protect the snakes habitat as being counter productive.
Ellerbeck says even the slightest disruption of habitat could be deadly for the snakes that exist in that area.
The Bruce Peninsula is one of the few areas in Ontario where the Massassauga Rattler lives.
