Owen Sound Police Service has won an award for its innovative use of the internet.
The department has won the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety Initiative Award for small to mid size communities.
Deputy Police Chief Bill Sornberger says they’ve been recognized for their website and the role its playing in getting motorists to drive more safely.
The police service has recently added a new feature to the website pinpointing where cruisers will be sitting on any given day watching for speeders.
And while on the surface it may seem strange to be giving away that information — Sornberger says their objective is to get residents to slow down.
Whether they do it through tickets and warnings or through information makes no difference.
Sornberger says the hits on the website are increasing all the time — and Owen Sound residents can be proud that their police service is on the cutting edge of this kind of technology.
The Deputy Chief says he isn’t aware of any other municipal force doing this kind of thing.
Sornberger along with Police Chief Tom Kaye are in Kingston this weekend picking up the award.
