A local member of the National Science Fair Committee is stepping down.
Retired South Bruce OPP officer John Twelves has completed his duties after serving on the board for the last three years.
Twelves — who is a Past Chair of the National Science Fair — says he will now focus his efforts on the regional Bluewater Science Fair Committee.
Twelves says he’s also looking into the possibility of becoming a Canada Wide Science Fair Judge.
Twelves has been actively involved in science fairs for 46 years now.
Twelves started as a competitor in Grade 4 and moved on to be a judge, mentor, regional and provincial representative as well as the national chair.
Twelves says science is alive and well in Grey and Bruce Counties — and he notes students from this region set the bar for the entire nation.
Twelves encourages youth to consider entering a science fair project.
He says it’s all about young minds and fresh ideas.
Twelves says all their hard work and determination can be turned into cash prizes, scholarships and of course the bragging rights that come with a medal.
Twelves points out science fair crosses all the strands of education — utilizing not only science skills but also math, english, drama and art.
