It’s time to bring some civility back to Question Period in the House of Commons in Ottawa.
Bruce Grey Owen Sound MP Larry Miller is supporting a motion that proposes some changes to make Question Period more Parliamentary.
Halton area MP Michael Chong introduced a motion to reform the daily question period, a motion that Miller says he enthusiastically supports.
Chong wants the speaker to exert more control over question period, elevate the decorum in the house, and lengthen the amount of time given for each question and answer.
The motion also calls on Ministers to be required to answer questions and more opportunity for back benchers to ask questions.
Miller says while he loves his job, he finds the atmosphere during question period very hard to take, and he would rather avoid the commons at that time.
The Bruce Grey Owen Sound MP even questions the validity of Question Period, saying the televised portion of the Parliamentary day is designed for the media, and MP simply ham it up for the cameras.
Miller also agrees that the speaker should exercise more control over what happens at that time, and if MP don’t follow the rules they should be kicked out for a day.
He says there is no indication at this time, whether the commons will deal with the question of reforming question period.
