Hanover has agreed to partially fund a Saugeen Ojibway peer review on the Hanover Walkerton landfill site expansion.
The town authorized the Saugeen Ojibway Nation to proceed with the proposed work up to a maximum cost of 34 thousand dollars.
Hanover’s share will be 17 thousand dollars — and Brockton would be responsible for the remaining 17 thousand, although that has not been approved yet.
Hanover Councillor Peter Hambly says the town has come to far in its landfill expansion plans to stop now.
And while the peer review is costly — Hambly says it won’t hurt to have additional input.
The proposed 6 million dollar expansion falls on traditional native lands, so Saugeen First Nation has a legal right to consult on the project.
Hambly says is more concerned about the timing.
He notes the proposed landfill expansion is before the province right now awaiting approval.
