The Hanover Fire Department wants a back up emergency communication system just in case a disaster hits.
The Fire Department has applied for federal funding through the Joint Emergency Preparedness Program to cover almost half of the 13 thousand dollar project.
The new equipment will not replace the existing emergency communication system — but rather serve as an alternate system in the event Hanover’s main Emergency Operations Centre is damaged or deemed unsafe.
Fire Chief Ken Roseborough says Hanover would be vulnerable without a backup system — especially if a disaster like a tornado ripped through the town and destroyed the civic centre where the current communication system is located.
Roseborough would like to install the proposed new equipment at Hanover’s new Regional Rec Complex.
The communication equipment would include a base radio with desk microphone and back up power, six portable radios with remote speaker microphones, a six unit charger, VHF antenna installed and custom programming for digital channels.
Hanover has already approved spending 55 per cent of the cost for the project.
