An Owen Sound writer, researcher and native activist has been honoured by the city for her tireless work in promoting local aboriginal culture and heritage.
Susan Schank was recently honoured during Heritage Week after being nominated by the Community Planning and Heritage Advisory Committee.
Schank’s native ancestry and ties to one famous local ancestor in particular, Catherine Sutton, have inspired much of her work.
Sutton was in a land dispute back in the late 1800’s over acreage now owned by Cobble Beach and went to England to see the Queen about it.
Schank says she has since reached her own an agreement with Cobble Links to protect the lot where Sutton is buried.
Schank also volunteers for Grey Roots, is on the board of the Grey County Historical Society and works with the Saugeen Metis Centre.
She also works at the aboriginal centre at Georgian College helping students trace their ancestors to see if they might qualify for funding.
Schank is in good company in receiving the Heritage Award.
Previous Owen Sound recipients include well known residents Melba Croft and Barry Lewin.
