You may not realize it but Saugeen Shores has its own cheerleading squad that travels to competitions throughout the province.
Their goal is to make it to the nationals.
The coach of the Saugeen Hawks Cheerleading squad Natalie Borsella says the team is made up of 18 females and 2 males.
She says they create their own cheers and choreography to go with them.
It’s a real commitment.
The squad practices several times a week preparing for the start of the competitive season which begins this month in Mississauga.
The group hopes to qualify for the regionals and provincials before taking a stab at the nationals.
Borsella says in order to keep the annual fees for the athletes reasonable, they are looking for sponsorship or donations and plan to do some fundraising of their own.
Meanwhile one of the two male team members if Ben Turcotte.
He says he was asked to come out by some female friends who needed him to perform the tumbling sequences during the cheer.
Turcotte says he went out for one practice, decided it was fun and has stuck with it ever since.
