Historical buildings receive protection status – why not school yards?
Councillor Chris Peabody wants Brockton’s official plan to include a green space clause that would protect old school yards and playgrounds from being developed.
Peabody says the idea came to him after a handful of residents voiced concern that the treed Walkerton Public School yard could turn into a future housing development project after the school closes.
Peabody says school yard green spaces deserve the same protection status that many historical buildings have.
He says to lose this green space would be devastating for neighbouring residents, children and those who use the land.
Peabody says it’s time local politicians get serious about defending green spaces.
He says the green space is worth preserving.
Peabody adds now is an excellent time to come up with a green space clause because Brockton is reviewing its official plan.
Brockton staff are going to look into the possibility of creating such a clause.
