It’s full speed ahead for the second stage housing projects in Port Elgin, Kincardine and Wiarton.
The Executive Director of Women’s House serving Bruce and Grey, Casey Weichert says the province is giving over one-million-dollars over two years for the three second stage builds.
Weichert says the money means when all homes are built, they will be mortgage-free and they will be able to charge a true geared-to-income rent to the occupants.
She says the Port Elgin facility is already built and has occupants.
The Kincardine facility just got site plan approval from Kincardine council and their next step is to apply for a building permit and construction can begin.
The Wiarton facility is being developed but will be the last to be constructed but all must be done by the end of March, next year.
Weichert also says they received an additional 124 thousan dollars for a number of smaller capital infrastructure projects at the Women’s House in Kincardine and the one in Owen Sound.
Weichert says it’s mixed feelings to receive the money.
She says they’re delighted to get the cash to do their work but it’s unfortunate that something like second stage housing is even needed in our society.
The housing is the middle step for abused women and children who have used the Women’s House facilities and now are taking the next step to get back into society.
Second stage housing has the same security features that a Women’s House would have.
