Today is a day to mark awareness for a disorder in children that is 100-percent avoidable.
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is a birth defect that causes permanent damage to the developing brain of a fetus.
Director of Protection Services for the Children’s Aid Society of Owen Sound Julie Lipsett says a study done in 2008 revealed Grey Bruce’s level of binge drinking has doubled in recent years.
Lipsett says at no time should alcohol be consumed throughout a pregnancy as it is not known what effect it can have on a fetus.
There is an awareness happening at the children’s aid society in Owen Sound today from 2 PM until 4:30 PM.
There will be networking – education – awareness and advocacy for those with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
The disorder causes many things in people including problems with attention spans and with authority figures.
Lipset says the brain damage is irreversible and can even cause ADHD in children.
