The proposed parking lot expansion at Bayview Public School in Owen Sound is on hold.
Bluewater District School Board Chair Jennifer Yenssen announced yesterday the relocation of the playground and parking lot expansion are temporarily postponed.
Yenssen says they will not move forward with plans until the Jodi Boley Memorial Tree can be transplanted to another area of the school.
Yenssen says the board realizes the importance of the Boley tree to the school community.
Boley — a former Bayview student — died of cancer in 1994.
The proposed construction would include expanding the parking lot and bus drop off area at the cost of the primary playground.
The playground would be relocated to the back of the school, away from vehicles and traffic.
Owen Sound City Council was going to vote on the approval of the site plan at last night’s meeting – until the announcement was made earlier in the day.
Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners says there has been enough controversy on the issue and thinks it is a good idea the Board is revisiting it.
Yenssen says although they will not move forward right away – improving the children’s safety by solving traffic congestion still must be done.
