147 first year medical students from The University of Western Ontario fanned out across southwestern Ontario to experience first-hand all that rural medicine has to offer.
Four students spent “Discovery Week” in Goderich at the Alexandria and Marine General Hospital.
Marty Bezaire, a native of Port Elgin, was floored by both the community and hospital.
He was impressed with the square and surprised to find out that AMHG do laparoscopic and orthopaedic surgery.
Kasia Rycerz was surprised to find out the AMGH had an dialysis unit and operating room.
Both students said the experience was beneficial and they could see themselves someday working in a rural hospital like AMGH.
The idea behind “Discovery Week” is to address doctor shortage by inspiring medical students to practice in rural communities upon completion of their medical training.
