Owen Sound residents will be seeing a change in their garbage pick up routine.
City Council has approved a bi-weekly collection schedule.
City council carried a motion at last night’s meeting to make the move from weekly to bi-weekly garbage pick up within Owen Sound.
The downtown will continue with the regular weekly pick up schedule to keep the core clean.
Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners says the change is in response to the decrease in actual garbage bag collection over the last five years.
Lovell Stanners says we are producing about half the number of bags compared to five years ago.
She says the other major factor for the change is the considerable saving which will result in a break to tax payers.
Lovell Stanners says the city is likely to see savings between 75 and 100 thousand dollars per year.
Councillors Tom Pink and Deb Haswell were the only votes against the motion.
Pink says he was not in favour because it is a reduction in services.
He also noted that other Townships who have implemented a bi-weekly collection also have a wet garbage pick up and Owen Sound currently does not.
Lovell Stanners say they will hold a public open house for residents to learn more about the collection routine.
A date has not been set for the open house.
The new pick-up will begin July 6, 2009.
