With the push of a button, Energy Minister George Smitherman officially opened Enbridge’s new Ontario Wind Power Project near Underwood yesterday.
Smitherman says the 115 turbine windfarm adds to Bruce County’s potential to provide clean electricity for the rest of Ontario.
Enbridge Gas Distribution President Janet Holder says it reinforces the Municipality of Kincardine’s reputation as the leading provider of clean electricity.
He says the development also helps the government reach it’s goal to end the need for coal-fired power plants.
Smitherman says wind turbines across the province were providing 300 megawatts of cleanly-produced electricity.
Holder says the development near Underwood is the company’s first wind farm in Ontario and the largest one it operates.
Construction began in July 2007and the first turbines began producting electricity a year later.
At peak capacity, the turbines can provide enough electricity for 50 to 60 thousand homes.
