Today is Food Freedom Day.
This is the day Grey Bruce residents and the rest of the people in Canada will have made enough income to pay for their individual grocery bill for the rest of the year.
Ron Bonnet is the Executive Vice President of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture and says Food Freedom Day is a little later this year because of the recent rise in the price of food.
He says even though prices are up a bit, Canadian are still getting the best deal in the western world for their food dollar.
Bonnett says in many parts of the world the price of food is much higher than in Canada.
Australians spend almost 13 per cent more for their food, Japanese 35 per cent and Mexicans more than 125 per cent more for their food that we do.
Bonnett says that despite consumers paying more for the food they consume, farmers are still getting a very small return for the food they produce.
He says farmers are getting only 7 cents for the corn they put in a four dollar box of corn flakes and 11 cents for the wheat they put into a loaf of bread.
Bonnett says on Food Freedom Day consumers should remember the important role farmers play in not just the production of food, but the role they play in the over all economy.
He says they do more than just bring income into their own farms, but are a link in economic development inĀ rural communities by buying fuel and feed and equipment from local suppliers
