Hanover Council is not pleased Grey County isn’t planning to include an “urban fringe ” area in its new official plan.
The designation would give the town the ability to negotiate with neighbouring West Grey if it needed to expand and increase development.
Councillor Bob White says the urban fringe concept dates back to when the neighbouring rural municipalities amalgamated so they could discuss future development if the need arose.
Hanover remained on its own and has not amalgamated.
White says Hanover is growing and will need more space sooner or later and the urban fringe area would allow them to negotiate future development plans with its neighbours.
White says Mayor Kathi Maskell is trying to persuade the county to change its mind and he hopes her efforts are successful.
White hints that Hanover could take the issue to the Ontario Municipal Board if Grey County doesn’t give the urban fringe designation another look.
