Some officials fear the recession could result in upswing in the domestic violence.
The experts say stress caused by financial pressures and job losses could push more people to drink and drug abuse, and that could result in a rise in domestic violence.
Patty Kelly is the Executive Director of the Women’s House of Grey Bruce and says people should not use the recession as an excuse for abuse andĀ says in many cases theĀ abusive situation in the home was present long before the troubles in the economy.
She says some women may actually remain in an abusive relationship because of the uncertain economic climate.
Kelly says the woman may fear she could not get a job or support her children after she leaves the relationship.
Kelly says as an organization they are reaching out into the community to make sure other community groups know how to get a hold of them or pass on the contact information to women who may need help.
She says it is especially difficult for women in rural areas to be able to get help because they are isolated and often lack transportation to get to a shelter.
Kelly says anyone wanting more information can call the Women’s house at 371-1600 or 1-800 265-3722
