On Soundingboard Senior Vice-President of policy with the Canadian Chamber, Shirley Ann George says as the Americans go into a recession, history shows that congress goes into a protectionist attitude to protect their industries at the expense of other countries.
George says right now legislators are talking about steel products used on public buildings but history has shown that could escalate to include many more commodities.
She says this attitude was a key contributor to the depression of the 1930’s.
The Canadian Chamber is asking all of its members and business people to let their American suppliers and customers know, not how bad this will be for Canada but how bad it will be for them.
George says a trade war is only going to bring higher prices in the U. S. and that’s the last thing anyone needs during a recession.
