The state of the U-S economy has forced layoffs at the Food Equipment company in Owen Sound.
49 people at the Hobart Food Equipment plant in Owen Sound will lose their jobs at the end of Thursday’s shift.
Director of Human Resources Paul Stethem tells Bayshore Broadcasting News their orders have dropped 35 per cent so they needed to cut production.
He says it’s a direct result of the slowdown in the United States.
90 per cent of the products made at the Owen Sound plant are sold in the U-S.
But Stethem hopes they will be able to recall the workers in May after 13 weeks.
The news is a change in direction for Hobarts as the company has been adding staff for the last year.
There are about 190 employees at the Owen Sound plant and they make a variety of ware wash machines as well as service and accessory parts.
