The Executive Director of the Ontario Cattlemen’s Association is bullish on a deal will see Hong Kong purchase more Canadian beef.
Dave Stewart calls the deal a good news story for the industry after several years of bad news impacting the industry.
He says the world beef market is so dynamic that any market opening will have a positive impact on Ontario producers.
Stewart also says Ontario producers will have no trouble meeting the high quality demanded by Asian markets.
He says Ontario beef has an excellent reputation overseas, especially in Asia.
Stewart says while not as large as the US market, having Hong Kong bidding on Ontario beef is good for the market and good for the producers.
As for the future, Stewart says in these uncertain economic times, it will be a challenging year for Ontario Cattle producers but good producers should get through it just fine.
He says with the fluctuating value of feed and the Canadian dollar it will be difficult for producers to accurately plan ahead.
