It is costing more to put food on the table in Grey Bruce.
Its becoming even more difficult to put healthy nutritious food on the table especially during the dark days of winter when fresh produce is in short supply and what is available is priced very high.
The Grey Bruce Health Unit has just released its 2008 survey of food prices in the region and according to Dietitian Linda Bumstead the cost of providing food for a family of our has increased to just over 145 dollars a week.
She says that is an increase from 2007 by five and a half per cent and with the current economic situation it is getting increasing difficult for people to afford nutritious and healthy food.
Bumstead says that one way families can try and cut down the cost of food is by shopping for local produced food which is cheaper to transport to market.
She says not only are you purchasing healthier food products, you also are supporting the local agricultural sector as well.
Bumstead says another way to cut down on the grocery bill is to ensure you put together a shopping list to make sure you purchase only the items you need when going shopping.
She says that cuts down in the impulse buying that often results in the purchase of unhealthy food products.
