The Grey-Bruce Health Unit has some advice on how to stay safe and healthy during the extemely cold weather.
Program Manager Andrew Barton says if you do have to head out in the car, make sure you have emergency supplies with you in case you become stranded.
Those supplies include something to provide traction, blankets, and extra clothing.
Barton says cases of frostbite are not usually much of a problem in this area, but it’s still important to prevent it and watch for symptoms.
He says those symptoms include changes in skin colour, skin that is painful and cold feeling.
Barton says hypothermia is a danger to be on the lookout for.
Barton says if you’re outdoors with other people in cold weather, be on the watch for shivering, lethargy, and poor mental judgement, all signs that hypothermia could be setting in.
Barton also says it’s a good idea to keep an eye on elderly relatives and neighbours when the weather is cold to make sure they are staying warm.
