Bruce Power of Tiverton has pulled its application to build a nuclear power plant west of Peace River, Alberta.
But, media spokesperson John Peevers tells beach news, the company isn’t giving up on opening a new nuclear plant there.
Peevers says they simply pulled the application with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission for now, because of public concern over the location.
He says some residents feel the build would be too close to Lac Cardinal.
Peevers says Bruce Power will take the next few months to do its homework and decide between two sites for a new plant.
Lac Cardinal is still up for consideration, while the other location is about 30 kilometres away and known as the White Mud Site.
Peevers says the distance is not a big change, but there may be different geological and environmental aspects the community would feel more comfortable with.
Peevers calls the withdrawal a “procedural issue” and insists it does not mean in any way the original location at Lac Cardinal is unsuitable for the project.
In fact, Lac Cardinal still may be chosen as the ultimate site in Alberta.
Peevers expects a decision between the two sites will be made mid year, and then a a new application will be issued to the CNSC.
