So-called “Smart Meters” are still on the way for Westario Power customers, but not as soon as originally planned.
Systems Manager Pat Protomanni says they had planned to start installing the devices on homes and business in February, but logistical issues have caused a delay.
He says they’ll now likely start in June.
Protomanni says the biggest logistical challenge has been finding a supplier.
He says they’re trying to find the best deal because provincial law puts the cost of smart meters onto the customer.
Protomanni says the government estimates the cost per customer will be between one and four dollars.
He thinks four dollars is too high and adds he doesn’t have an official cost figure for Westario customers yet because they’re still working on those details.
Protomanni explains smart meters, in addition to monitoring electrical consumption, allow the Independent Electricity System Operator to gather information to decide what power demand will be in the following hours and days.
The Ontario government plans to have the entire province converted to smart meters in 2010.
