The money comes from the City’s Family Physician Recruitment Committee.
Chair Michelle Mannerow says the bursaries are for students who graduated from local high schools and have been accepted into med school.
Mannerow notes it’s so difficult to get into med school, and they wanted to help local residents succeed.
Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners says the scholarships are critical in encouraging and supporting local students as they get their medical education.
Mannerow hopes when the students decide on their specialty, they will think about family medicine.
This bursary is different from the incentive package that is offered to family doctors who sign a contract to come to Owen Sound.
Mannerow notes it’s still very difficult to attract family doctors to Owen Sound.
Mannerow calls it a fierce competition — but she feels strongly that keeping in contact with local residents will improve their odds of landing a family physician.
Mannerow says they also continue to fundraise to keep the bursary program alive.
There is fund with Community Foundation Grey Bruce, the committee holds a number of fundraisers and a number of local businesses also donate to their work.
