Owen Sound Animal Shelter Official Rene Robins says with all the hustle and bustle of Christmas, this is perhaps the worst time to introduce a new animal to your home.
She says when people come to the shelter with thoughts of a puppy or kitten dancing in their heads they suggest putting it off until after the holiday.
Robins says adopting a puppy can be especially difficult at this time of the year as the bad weather limits the amount of time you can spend outside training the animal.
She says this is the one time of the year the Animal Shelter offers up gift certificates that can be given as a present and can be redeemed at a later date for the dog or cat of your choice.
Robins also says they want to sit down with prospective pet owners and find out their long term commitment to the animal.
She says owning a pet is a life time commitment and she says there is nothing more frustrating that getting a call in the spring from some one who adopted a pet over the holiday, but now does not have the time to look after the animal.
