Huron Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell says its no secret, Ontario relies on the auto industry which means we simply can’t afford for it to go under.
She says without a doubt, Ontario needs to be diversifying our economy.
She says one way of doing that is focusing on “green jobs” of the future – which very well could still be within the auto industry.
Looking ahead, Mithcell says “of course there is a future for the auto industry in Ontario.”
However, she says that people need to understand there WILL be job losses in the process – and in the end the industry WILL look different.
Alberta’s finance minister recently threw her support behind Ontario’s auto sector, saying her province largely supports efforts to rescue the auto sector, even if it is concentrated in Ontario.
In response, Mitchell says there is a mutual understanding throughout all of Canada that if the auto industry shuts down – it will have a big impact on the numbers at a federal level.
The decision to shut down Chryler’s plants includes about 98-hundred people in Brampton and Windsor and at a casting plant in Toronto.
Both Ford and G-M have announced similar measures as they try to survive a period of sluggish auto sales.
