The fee increase is designed to keep pace with proposed spending for the year ahead.
Public Works Manager Jim O’Rourke says council first wants to make sure landfill fees are revenue neutral.
He says further adjustments in fees might be needed if it’s discovered money is being lost.
O’Rourke says in 2009, they want to track revenue that comes into the landfill site when people bring in things like old TV sets and other electronics and compare it with the cost to municipality of having it recycled.
He says the goal is to eventually have the municipality charge landfill fees that cover the full cost of disposal.
O’Rourke says recycling of so-called “e waste” is growing fast compared to 10 years ago when it was almost non-existent.
