The former Liberal MP for Bruce Grey Owen Sound says the party has to find a way to let grassroots members pick their next leader.
Ovid Jackson feels that is the best way to choose the next Liberal leader to succeed Stephane Dion.
Frontrunner Michael Ignatieff is pushing the National executive to accept the choice of caucus this week.
But rival Bob Rae feels all party members should vote for the next party leader.
Jackson says the nomination should be held before Parliament resumes January 26th.
He tells Bayshore Broadcasting News it should be easy to get the Riding Presidents and Executive to vote for the next leader.
Jackson says Dion’s decision to step down now is the right decision because the Liberals have to be ready if an election is called early in the new year.
He hasn’t made up his mind about who would be a better leader — Rae or Ignatieff — but he says both would be good competitors to Prime Minister Harper.
There is still a chance of a Liberal NDP coalition government — but Jackson doesn’t support that idea.
The former Liberal MP says a coalition wastes too much time and involves too many political games.
But Jackson feels the Governor General made the right decision to prorogue Parliament.
