Kincardine Council has approved–in principle, a proposal for a new Learning Centre in the municipality.
Mayor Larry Kraemer says council still wants to see a more in-depth business plan for the facility, which is to be located in the former Westario Power building on Queen Street.
He says the lease is also in the works to let E-Learn-dot-ca set up shop in the building.
E-Learn provides distance education courses from colleges in universities in smaller communities across the province.
They currently use the Power Worker’s Training Centre near Tiverton, but that space will no longer be available in January.
Kraemer says his goal is to bring post-secondary education to the region.
He’s now looking for more partners to get involved with the Learning Centre.
Kraemer says there is interest from community organizations and he wants to see arrangements that will lead to conventional college and university classes taking place at the centre.
