Everyone takes the time to tune up their car for winter, and Owen Sound Fire Officials are reminding people not to forget to give their furnace a tune up.
Fire Safety Officer Greg Nicol says not only will it work better but it could very well safe your life by preventing carbon monoxide poisoning.
He says now the cold weather has arrived it is time for people to get their furnaces and other fuel burning appliances inspected by authorized service personnel to prevent that hazard from occurring.
Nichol says that carbon monoxide is a very dangerous and deadly gas that is colourless, odourless, tasteless and is often called the silent killer.
He says it inhibits the blood’s capacity to transport oxygen throughout the body and in high concentrations can kill in a mater of minutes.
Nichol says some of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are flu like symptoms like headaches, nausea, dizziness, burnings drowsiness and even loss of consciousness.
He says everyone should have one or two carbon monoxide detectors in their home and if they ever go off, people should leave the house right away and call 911 from a neighbours home.
Nichol says the fire department then will come and use special equipment to test the air in the house to see where the gas is coming from.
