Legion President Bob Griffiths says there has been little opportunity to comment on the project, and he would like to meet with Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners in the new year before work resumes.
Griffiths says one concern he has, is the project outlined by City Hall leaves very little room for the troops to gather for Remembrance Day ceremonies at the Cenotaph.
A consultants’ report calls for more trees, shrubs and other landscaping features…. giving the Cenotaph a more park-like setting.
He wants that issue addressed, and would like to see water flowing again from the top of the monument.
It was shut-off in the 60’s and Griffiths doesn’t think it would be too hard to get it operating again.
Veteran Affairs Canada has set aside 25 thousand dollars for restoration work, and city hall is setting aside a total of 95 thousand dollars for the project.
Owen Sound Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners hopes to have the work done in time for a rededication ceremony on Remembrance Day in 2009.
