The menu is short.
In the near future Saugeen Shores will have a new indoor aquatic centre or they’ll do away with pool facilities.
The decision lies in the hands of the community at large who are being invited to public meetings to have their say, pro or con.
Pool study consultant Bernie Range says their mandate is to bring concepts to the table through trends and visits to other communities.
However Range says ultimately the decision lies in the hands of the community at large based on need and ability to pay.
Saugeen Shores manager of Recreation and Culture Jayne Jagelewski says they hope the two upcoming public meetings brings out people on both sides of the argument.
She says they would really like to hear from people who do not and will not use the swimming facility but might take advantage of the centre if there were other amenities, such as a walking track, a hot tub or even a spa.
She says the ideas of limitless.
The two meetings are set for tonight 7pm to 9pm at the Southampton Town Hall and again on Tuesday, December 9th, noon to 1:30pm at the Rotary Hall at the Plex in Port Elgin.
Jagelewski says the ideas have to come from the public, not the town staff if the project is going to work.
Our current Centennial Pool at Saugeen District Secondary School is approaching its life span of 35 years.
Town officials just want to be ready with any decision before that day comes that the old facility needs to be shut down for safety reasons.
